New house, new stuff! (maybe?)

May 24, 2009

So, my roommates and I are very fortunately ending our lease early at our current house due to awful landlords and lots and lots of leaking. As of June 1st, Nick, Georgia and I will be moving to a ridiculously perfect Wicker Park apartment and are looking to furnish it with very wonderful stylish modern things that cost no more than 100$ total. Unreasonable? I know. Impossible? Most likely.  Optimistically, we went to Salvage One yesterday and trudged through floors and floors of super cool furniture, odds and ends etc. that were very very very far out of our price range. It was wonderful. If you live in Chicago, you should go immediately just to browse the “door floor”.

Since we still have yet to get anything, I am using my ample time during the weekdays to browse online coolness. If you have any of these items shown below, I would like them. For free. Thank you.

Laser-cut Wood Jewelry: Anthony Roussel

April 4, 2009

Http://www.anthonyroussel.com/ features only 9 images of Roussel’s work and yet has page after page of selected exhibitions. Take a look at even one of his pieces and it’s very clear what all the fuss is about. His laser cut jewelry is both sculptural and wearable, high-arty and organic. And it has shadows, undulating lines, and color. What else could you need, really?

Fine Art Metalsmith/ Jeweler: Josh Wendler

Metal Wendler, the newly updated Etsy site, showcases the work of metalsmith/jeweler extraordinaire Josh Wendler (who, when he’s not playing with torches and hammers, is a breakdancing, lovely-haired Panamanian). His work is phenomenal and he, personally, is so very wonderful. If you have a desire for anything from steampunk to fine art pendants, brooches, or rings, I highly suggest you take a look at his site and pick out some wonderful-ness.

Moss, rings, and glass!: Carol Kingsbury Gwizdak

April 3, 2009

Clearly, I am very partial to the whole test-tube-esque/natural aesthetic, so these, of course, are right up my alley. I LOVE the design of these rings, the use of natural moss, and the porcelain plinths are just plain beautiful. I am definitely a fan.

There is MUCH more of her wonderful work at: http://www.carolgwizdak.com

More wonderful Icelandic design: Vík Prjónsdóttir

While I (very unfortunately) saw no seals on my trip, I did see many, many beards. Sealpelt onesies -baby and adult- and beard caps have, according to Prjónsdóttir, both historical ties to Icelandic culture and fantastic design. I would have loved one of each to help me suffer through the Chicago winter warmly.

Speaking of Iceland…Icelandic metalsmithing and fine art: Hafsteinn Juliusson

Here a just a few of the wonderful/ridiculous designs from lovely Iceland that I am partial to:

Hafsteinn Juliusson is a genius. Stackable stools and Growing Jewelry with Icelandic moss are just a couple of his many product designs- check the rest out at http://hafsteinnjuliusson.com/ !

“Growing Jewelry is a redefinition of modern values. It is a clash of jewelry an gardening; couture and organism… It is important to take good care of Growing Jewelry. The owner must water it regularly and nurture it like any other plant. So It’s up to the owner to make sure that the jewelery is at it’s best.”

Sounds just about perfect to me.

Recent traveling excitement: Iceland!

March 21, 2009

I’ve decided to add some recent traveling/fun-having photos in hopes that soon I will have nice, new, wonderful adventures to document and share. For the time being however, with no travel plans as of yet, I will enjoy looking at fun places I’ve already been.

Volunteering in Iceland was absolutely fantastic and there was more phenomenal metalsmithing, sculptural, and 2-d art than I have ever seen in one place. Now add to that moss-covered lava flows, black sand beaches, rainbow colored mountains and very few people. I could live there forever.
